JANM invites K–12 educators to apply for an in-depth, place-based, summer workshop. Little Tokyo: How History Shapes a Community Across Generations will examine history through the unique neighborhood of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, California. This weeklong workshop will be offered twice: Monday, June 22–Friday, June 26, 2026, and Monday, July 13–Friday, July 17, 2026. Each session can accommodate thirty-six educators.
Join scholars, educators, curators, and community historians to learn about this unique place and how it has evolved through history. This program will examine how Little Tokyo has been impacted by events and issues such as restrictive covenants, eminent domain, the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans, the civil rights movement, and gentrification. With a focus on Japanese American history, we will consider the past’s relevance to present day issues of identity and preservation.
JANM has previously offered similar workshops and here’s what participants had to say:
“Coming together with teachers from across the country, to explore the history of Little Tokyo, helped me see this history in new ways and through new lenses. We had all learned the basics about immigration, urbanization, and Japanese American incarceration, but our reading, experiences, and conversations with participants and experts allowed us to dig beneath the surface. I particularly enjoyed being able to learn and discuss with teachers who brought their own perspectives. It helped me learn much more than simply reading a few books or viewing a historical site on my own.”
—Elementary school educator, Utah“This program is life changing. The opportunity to hear from the people who lived the history is so powerful and inspiring. Being able to stand in and experience the places where the history happened is humbling and important to truly understand the history.”
—Middle school educator, Virginia“This week at JANM connected me to the Japanese American experience on a deeper, more personal level. Learning from scholars, survivors, and community leaders, and visiting sites like Manzanar, made the past feel real and urgent. I left inspired and more committed than ever to teaching history in a way that centers voices and stories that matter.”
—High school educator, Illinois
